Juniper Muller (she / they)

Please introduce yourself

I'm Juniper Muller (she/they), a queer, nonbinary woman living on Boon Wurrung Land, working mostly on Wurundjeri land. I work in queer community as a psychologist doing 1 on 1 therapy, with a focus on gender, sex, and sexuality, as well as doing bits of teaching, research, and advocacy mostly around LGBTQIA+ issues. I was a proud founding member of Melbourne Bisexual Network, and have been more active in LGBTQ spaces for 10 years.

Please tell us a little about how you see yourself, in terms of being bi+ / multi-gender attracted?

I'm bisexual, queer, polyamorous and adventurous in play. I also run Trans Sexual Podcast, and have spoken about my sexuality on JOYFM and Triple J.

What would you like to share with us about your experience of being bi+?

I knew I liked women from a young age, early puberty, but my attraction to men and people outside the gender binary was like an incomplete thought. I grew up in the 90s, and the word ‘gay’ meant bad- there was a lot of casual homophobia, and on reflection, plenty of biphobia and cisgenderism in media I was watching too.

I met my partner at 16, who had told me she was a lesbian, but then later asked me out over MSN Messenger (!). She was open about her multigender attraction, and I felt at the time that I accepted that pretty readily. It didn’t feel like a big deal, because the most important thing was that we loved each other. We were nonmonogamous from 21, and though I wish we’d had more resources and support, learned a lot, had fun, and did our best not to hurt each other or others too badly.

Fast forward to my mid-20s, and after focusing on my studies and career I was really exploring myself, and found- yes, I was a bisexual. I came out to my partners and family, started getting involved in community, then rapidly found my niche working and volunteering in queer community. I helped found Melbourne Bisexual Network, variously filling secretary, vice president, treasurer, and president roles across the years as needed. It was a pleasure and honour to be part of leading the Bi+ Pride Parade contingent as it grew from 10-20, to 50+ people. Along the way I appeared on radio/tv, contributed to research, spoke on panels and peer education, and met so so SO many incredible bi+ people. Special shout out to Ruby Mountford, fellow Leo and Bicon, though I could name many more.

A few years later gender came knocking, and I started my way exploring my femininity as a nonbinary person. A pandemic, hormones, and eventually married (a bride!), I’m now a nonbinary woman in my mid 30s happy with my wife, my girlfriend, lovers and friends, still very much in queer community. I run Trans Sexual Podcast, and almost 100% of my guests have been Bi+ (as well as trans). B with the T!

I’m so glad to be bisexual, proud to be queer, and to experience the joys of people across gendered experience. If you’re bi+, you’re queer enough, and I can’t recommend connecting with your bi+ community enough!
